ART ONE CERAMICS

My Art One class has just finished a two week unit on ceramics. They did an outstanding job. I wanted to share one piece with you all. This is a small sculpture done by Kendrick. You may not be able to tell by the photograph but it is a boy and his dog. I really like this piece. In fact, I like it so much that I have decided to enter it in the N.C. Scholastic Art Competition in Wilson, N.C. Let Kendrick and me know what you think about it too!

Arts and Technology Business Cards

Above are the finished products of my Arts and Technology class. Their assignment was to create an original logo for a business of their choosing. Then they had to design a business for that business. This was their first attempt at such a project and I think they did a fantastic job!!!

FINAL SPARC ARTISTS VISIT WCHS

Today we were delighted to have our last two SPARC grant artists visit WCHS and do a presentation for my Art I class. They are husband and wife team, Hanna and Jodi Hollnagel-Jobran. They are both artists, professors and owners of J&H Studio Inc. and are committed to quality public art projects, both nationally and internationally. Their work ranges from realistic to abstract adn in any material, but they prefer using high quality durable materials. They have monumental sculptures figurative and abstract in the following countries: Cuba, Argentina, Israel which is Hanna's home country, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Mexico, Canada, Germany and Denmark. As part of their presentation they both showed PowerPoint presentations of their own work. My students found this to be very interesting since they knew nothing about the casting process. They also took small samples of bronze casts which were surprisingly heavy.

All three of the final three artists will be returning back to WCHS to make their last presentation to our selection committee. Then we will make the decision as to who will be commissioned to do the piece of public art for WCHS. Who will it be? Keep checking back and find out. Then this blog will contain photos as the whole process progesses.

SPARC GRANT FOR WCHS

We here at WCHS are so fortunate in having received this year's SPARC Grant from the N.C. Arts Council. The grant is for $25,000 and will be used for a piece of public art for our school done by a professional N.C. artist. We are the only recipient this year and have received the largest grant ever so far. There were ten artists who applied and one of our committees narrowed it down to the three finalists. Today two of them came to WCHS to talk with two of my art classes. The first artist to come was Ms. Virginia Wright-Frierson, a muralist. She has done many commissioned murals one being a huge painting attached to the ceiling of the building where the shooting took place at Columbine High School. She visited my Advanced Art Class this morning, showed us slides of her work and a video of the making of the Columbine mural. My students really enjoyed talking with her and were very impressed with her paintings. http://home.att.net/~vmwf/

The second artist to visit WCHS today was Mr. Brad Spencer, a sculptor, who specializes in using bricks as his sculptural medium. He and his assistant came to my fourth period Art I class this afternoon. My students and I were overwhelmed with what can be done using bricks. He showed up several small pieces that were used to give clients an idea as to what the finished piece would look like. Then he showed us a slide show of lots of his ceramic sculptures as well as commissioned brick pieces. My students and I were delighted with his work and his visit. Also in attendance were Ms. Linda Bamford from the N.C. Arts Council and Mr. Kelly Jones, Columbus County Arts Supervisor.

CD COVER

Here is another project that was given to my Arts and Technology Class. This one is the case for a CD by their favorite performer or group. The title had to be "MegaCheck" and the slogan was "help _____________ write a megacheck to the poor children of Africa". The majority of the proceeds from the CD were to be given to help the poverty-stricken children of Africa. The photos of the children were taken by me while in Ghana, West Africa during the summer. These two cases were designed by Tiffany and Jessica.

MAGAZINE COVERS

This week I assigned my Arts and Technology Class a project in which they had to design a cover for a brand new magazine for the youth of America. The requirements were to design a logo for the magazine which is the title - "N 2 IT"; one photograph for the main story with title; and three other articles with optional photos. The price and date also had to be included and barcode was also optional. Here are three samples that I think are excellent and very professional looking. These three were done by Natalie, Amber and Chad.

Wedding

On the second Saturday in September I had the pleasure of being a groomsman at Michael and Reecie Washington's wedding. It was held in Lumberton. This was my first time being a groomsman and I agreed to do it for my good buddy and former student Michael. Here is a picture of the student and teacher.

Glass Workshop

During the third weekend in September I was very fortunate in being able to attend a glass workshop in Clemmons, NC at Warm Glass Elements. It had to have been one of the most awesome, enjoyable and informative workshops that I have taken during my seventeen year career. The topic of the workshop was doing various glass firings in a ceramic kiln such as glass casting. I made three original pieces of which I am very proud of two of them! LOL! Hopefully once my kiln has been revamped somewhat I will be able to teach this to my advanced art students as well as the other county art teachers. Unfortunately the two examples of glass that I have in the photos are not mine. They are two of my favorite pieces that were displayed in the Warm Glass gallery. Don't I look very enthused? Well have you ever crammed your thumb in a cup of algenate in order to let it dry so that I can be used as a mold? Not very exciting!!!!

Art One Studies Huichol Indians of Mexico

During our study of the Huichol Indians of Mexico, my Art One students did yarn paintings similar to the ones created by the Huichols. Their assignment was to create a round yarn painting in which they had to incorporate one of their initials. Everyone's final product was beautiful and made a nice exhibit in the hallway.

Columbus County Visual Art Teachers Meeting

Recently during one of our early release days, all of the visual arts teachers had a meeting in my art room at West Columbus. During this meeting we discussed firing of the kiln, using a ceramic kiln to do glass casting and my recent trip to India as we viewed the artifacts that I purchased while there.
