INTEGRATING WRITING WITH ART

Author Ernest Hemingway was once bet that he could not write a complete story with just six words. Believe it or not, he did. Afterwards Hemingway said that this piece was the best prose he had ever written. What do you think? His six word story was as follows: "For Sale: Baby shoes, never worn." Wow!

So I assigned this writing task to my Arts and Technology and Advanced Art classes. I wanted to share with you their original prose. By the way the Arts and Technology class was asked to illustrate their prose as well. I have included a few of them for you to look at. All of the other students' writing have been published in this post. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

PHOTOS FROM TURKEY DAY NINE (part 4)

The last thing that we did was to attend a briefing on domestic/foreign policy issues hosted by Eurasia Strategic Research Foundation - ASAM. From there we went to the hotel where we had our final dinner party together. What a wonderful nine days it was!!!!!!

Our next visit was to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. The museum has a a priceless collection stretching from prehistoric times to the classical period. It is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest museums, and is housed in a restored Ottoman Han. the different cultures of Anatolia are presented here in chronological order and include outstanding examples of the art of the Hatti, Hittites, Phrygians and Urartians.

We ate lunch at a restaurant at the Ankara Castle and what a delightful experience it was, including the waiter.

Well this was the last day of my trip. We departed for the city tour of Ankara. Although it only became Turkey's capital in 1923, Ankara is by no means a new city, indeed it is considerably older than Istanbul, having been founded by the Hittite, circa 1200 B.C. It was soon taken over by the Phrygians whose vast necropolis came to light in 1925. It prospered under the Romans and a number of monuments have survived from this era, including a Temple of Augustus and a Column of Julian. Our first visit was to the Mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey.

PHOTOS FROM TURKEY DAY EIGHT (part 7)

After dinner we went to see a Whirling Dervishes ceremony at the magnificent Saruhan Caravanserai. Unfortunately photographs were not allowed during the ceremony itself. They did allow us to take photos of these ceramic figurines though. I will have to say though that the performance was awesome. I was so amazed at how long these men could twirl in a circle without getting dizzy. This was really a highlight of the trip for me to witness something that I had wanted to see in person for a long time. I will never forget this evening.

Before we went back to the hotel for dinner we had the chance to go to a place where they sold and demonstrated how they made beautiful Turkish carpets. It was interesting to see how they took the silk cocoons, soaked them in water, and then began to create individual silk threads from them. We were told that one silk worm can produce a single thread one mile long in three days. Wow!!!!!!! The ladies that were weaving carpets were so talented and skilled in the special Turkish knots. As you can see the end products are absolutely beautiful as well as expensive.

Here are some more photos of the beautiful Cappadocia that I just could not leave out. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

One of the most interesting places of business that we visited that day was a pottery workshop in the town of Avanos which is known for its pottery. The pottery there was some of the most beautiful that I have ever seen. The detail on the designs done in glazes was phenomenal. All of the above photographs were taken in the pottery.
