THE UNVEILING CEREMONY FINALLY

Last night the unveiling ceremony was held here at WCHS. There was a large crowd present for all of the festivities which included speeches, music, songs, slide show, the unveiling itself and refreshments. My advanced students unveiled it before a crowd of eager viewers. Everyone was very pleased with the final piece of sculpture. I think most people were amazed that such a beautiful piece of artwork could be made out of bricks. During the refreshments everyone spoke to Brad, his wife Tammy and his assistant Tara, to my students and to Fred, the mason. This has been one of the most interesting projects that I have ever worked on during my seventeen year career as an art teacher. My students nor I will ever forget it. If you have not had a chance to see the sculpture in person, please come by for a visit. Remember it's not just ours since it's on our campus, it belongs to our whole community.

THE ARTISTS ADMIRE THEIR WORK

Well it's completed!!!!!!! My advanced class went out today to see and admire their work. They were all very excited to see their puzzle pieces and their placement. Now comes the unveiling ceremony on Thursday at 6:00 pm. But here is a preview of what the final sculpture looks like.

SUBTLE DETAILS IN THE SCULPTURE

I had not noticed all of the subtle details that Brad had included into the piece until just this morning as Tammy pointed them out to me. Since these areas won't show up in the photos of the entire piece, I wanted to share them with you. Hope you enjoy and appreciate them as much as I did.

MEMORIAL DAY AND STILL WORKING

Here it is Memorial Day and the Spencers are still working; however; this should be the day of completion. Today they came in just to fit in the puzzle pieces that my students made. They each decided on a theme and did a clay piece that symbolized their particular theme. The pieces were then fired and now they are being permanently attached to the main sculpture. So in the photos you will see both sides completed, part of the student puzzle pieces, the name plaque, and Brad fitting one of the pieces into the main sculpture.

THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE

I inadvertantly forgot some photos so here they are out of order. Brad and Tara came earlier this month to allow my students some input as to where to put the final piece and for them to carve words into the paving stones that will be placed around the sculpture. I'll try to do better next time.

FRIDAY MORNING

Well it's coming right along. Brad said that it should be finished today except for putting in my students puzzle pieces. So here are this morning's pictures.

AFTERNOON PROGRESS

Brad, Tammy and Fred are moving right along now. I think they are hoping that it will be finished by tomorrow, Friday, except for the individual tiles that my students made. They will be attached either Sunday or Monday.

STUDY OF GHANA IN ART ONE

During the last two weeks of school we are going to be discussing global education. I will use all the information and items that I have purchased while on my international trips. We will discuss arts, crafts, dress, foods, etc. of Ghana, Japan and India. Yesterday Art One students dressed up in authenic Ghanaian clothes, drew one another in these outfits and ate Fufu with light soup. Below are some of the pictures that I took during both of my classes.
