PHOTOS FROM TURKEY DAY SIX (part 1)
Our sixth day started off with a leisurely breakfast at the hotel. From there we went back into Ephesus to visit the Ephesus Archaeological Museum. It was filled with lots of artifacts from the surrounding area. I liked the sculptures the most. Next we went to St. John's Church or Basilica of St. John. It was built by Emperor Justinian in the early 6th century and provided the model for the cathedral of San Marco in Venice. I really enjoyed these ruins. I suppose one reason was that this was the resting place of St. John from the Bible. In the distance just beyond the mountains was the house where Mary, mother of Jesus, supposedly spent the remainder of her life after the crucifixion of her Son. We did not have time to go there for a visit. One interesting feature of the church was the baptistery. You'll notice that it was relatively small. It was also positioned east to west. The person entered the baptistery from the west signifying the end of a sinful life and exited in the east, which signified a new beginning or life in Jesus Christ. But the most inspirational thing that I saw was the tomb of St. John. It was fairly simple in design with one marble stone with his name on it.
