Your Final Exam consists of five parts. Make sure you submit everything to me at the end of the testing period. Each part will count as 20 points and the total will be worth 100 points.

PART ONE:

Look carefully at the painting above. It was created by a very interesting artist. Write a critique about the painting. Be sure to include elements and principles of art. Also tell me your feelings about the painting. What do you see in the painting? What do you think the artist was trying to say? Which emotion does it evoke? Do you think it might be symbolic of something else? IS IT ART?
PART TWO:
Record statements about all the pieces of artwork you have created this semester.
PART THREE:
Turn in your research piece in which you compared and contrasted the lives and work of two artists.
PART FOUR:
Do the online research worksheet that I gave you. Answers can be written on the sheet itself or on another piece of paper.
PART FIVE:
Having been recently diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, I have decided to work on a series of artwork about this disease and my reactions to it as it progresses. The series will chronocle my journey, my fight, my fears and all the other emotions that I will be going through. I will sketch out an idea or two so that you might better understand what I'm talking about. Then I want you to decide what emotional issue in your life you might possibly do a series about. Briefly tell me about it and then do two sketches showing me ideas for two possible ideas in your series. The more personal the issue the better the series will be. If you want this to be kept PRIVATE make note of it on your paper and I will not mention or show it to anyone else.
UPON COMPLETION of the exam, make sure your name if on everything before you turn it in to me.

This is a drawing of a three point perspective drawing of buildings. We do not study three point perspective in Art One but I wanted you to see what one looked like. Write how this drawing differs from a two point perspective drawing.

While my students were viewing the artwork at Barton College, they were listening to a podcast that I had prepared for them. The podcast consisted of twenty clues to twenty different pieces of artwork in the exhibit. The student who gets the most correct answers wins a prize. FIELD TRIP TO BARTON COLLEGE

Last Friday I had the pleasure of taking 23 art students to Barton College in Wilson, N.C. to view the N.C. Scholastic Art Exhibit. Mr. Mark Gordon gave us a tour of the art department. Afterwards the students took part in a scavenger hunt. Earlier I had created a podcast containing 20 clues about 20 different pieces of artwork in the exhibit. They uploaded the podcast to their MP3 players and Ipods. As they viewed the show they listened to the clues. The student getting the most correct answers will win a prize. Wonder who it will be?

COLLABORATIVE CONTINUOUS LINE DRAWING

Art One did an interesting project last week. After our study of the five kinds of lines my first period class did a collaborative continous line drawing of a portrait using yarn and Elmer's glue. It was messy but much fun and very successful.

TWO GOLD KEY WINNERS

WCHS was fortunate enough to have two more gold key winners this year in the N.C. Scholastic Art Exhibit at Barton College in Wilson, N.C. Below are the two winners, Shronda and Deven, with their winning pieces. Congratulations to them both. Now these two pictures will be entered into the national art exhibit in NYC, NY. Hopefully one or even both of them will be accepted. So far we have had four national winners.

Shronda's piece is a Prisma Color pencil drawing done on an old record album.

Deven's is a mixed media piece done with collage, Elmer's glue, turpentine and gold paint.

LESSON FOR FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2011

As you know I have taken the NAHS and advanced art students to Barton College to see the N.C. Scholastic Art Exhibit. WCHS was fortunate to have two of the 209 gold keys this year. So while I'm away today this is what I would like for you all to do.

FIRST:
In conclusion of our mandala project I want you to see some awesome mandalas done by an artist named Paul Heussanstamm. Click on the link for his website and gallery of mandalas.

Next week we will be studying about Egyptian art so as an introduction I want you to go to this website: http://www.pbs.org/empires/egypt/special/hieroglyphs/name_spell.html
This is an interesting site in which you can type your name or any other English words and they will automatically be translated into Egyptian hieroglyphics. I want you to type in your first and last name. You may need to do your first name and then afterward do your last name. On a sheet of paper I want you to copy the symbols in the order that they are in. Copy them as closely as possible. You may draw them from left to right or from top to bottom - it doesn't matter. Next, I want you to finish this sentence...."My dream for the future is ______________________________." Fill in the blank and translate this into hieroglyphics as well. (Creating) I would suggest using three or four words.

Lastly, I want you to do a search online for a "Contemporary Artist", or one who is still living. Look at his/her artwork. Choose your favorite artist, write down his/her name and give me a paragraph as to why you chose this particular artist.

Once you have the symbols drawn and the paragraphs written on your paper, sign your name on it and turn it in to the substitute teacher. She will make sure I get them for Monday.

KLAY KIDS CHRISTMAS

Yesterday afternoon and last evening we held our first Klay Kids Christmas in the artroom. This event was to allow family members of my Art One students to have a chance to create small Christmas gifts. And guess who served as their instructor? That's right, my Art One students. Although the turnout was low, all who attended had a great time and had the chance to make some really nice ceramic pieces. Perhaps we will do this again next year as well.

Today I had the pleasure of visiting Ms. Brown's third grade class at Cerro Gordo Elementary School. Why? Because her students and my Arts and Technology students are going to do a collaborative project. The third graders today drew original monsters with markers. Later I will scan these images and present them to my students who will enhance them using PhotoImpact. Hopefully we will be publishing a pictorial book entitled "Monster Makeover". Today Mr. Boyd's Biology class and my Art One class in order to create animals that do not actually exist. These creatures were made out of clay. My art students served as peer tutors for the Biology students and did they all do an extraordinary job. I was delightfully surprised with the end products for just one class period. This had to be a huge success and proves that integration works!!!!

SKYPE SESSION WITH ARTIST JOHN WHALLEY

Friday my Advanced Art class had the honor and pleasure of taking part in a Skype session with nationally known Maine artist, John Whalley. I saw his work online and emailed him. From there we started talking about his connecting with my advanced students. Finally we agreed on Skyping in which my students were allowed to visit his studio and he was allowed to come into our classroom via this interactive program. Mr. Kelly Jones, Arts Supervisor, made all preparations for the session and he served as narrator. Below are a few photos from Friday's class. INTEGRATED UNIT ON MASKS

Above is a video of masks from Italy, Japan, Africa and Greece. The video is an integrated unit on masks by Ms. Bri Lindsey, drama instructor, and myself. My Art One students created paper mache masks that were used by Ms. Lindsey's beginning drama students. They will perform for my students as a grand finale to our unit.

MY FIRST ONLINE TECHNOLOGY COURSE FOR TEACHERS

About two weeks ago I started teaching a technology course for teachers which I have done many times in the years past. But what is different about this course is that it is entirely online. After completion of ten assignments each teacher will receive three CEUs. This summer I did the preliminary work on this course by doing written tutorials and video tutorials. One interesting thing about this online course is that it is not made possible by Moodle nor Blackboard, but rather an online service called Udemy.com.

GUEST ARTIST/SPEAKER AT ECU

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to East Carolina University as guest artist/speaker by longtime friend Dr. Alice Arnold. I worked with her students on a project in which they painted designs on river rocks. Upon completion all the rocks are exhibited in a circle. The lesson plan was integrated with Social Studies and the story of the young Japanese girl named Sadako who died as a result of the bombing at Hiroshima. I had a wonderful time and you can see the students did a great job with their end product. Thank you so much Dr. Arnold for the invitation.

FIELD TRIP TO BROOKGREEN GARDEN

Earlier this spring approximately 20 of my art students had the pleasure of going to Brookgreen Garden to view the grounds and wonderful sculpture. This trip was made possible by county Arts Supervisor Kelly Jones and a grant that he wrote. We all had a great time as the photos prove.

I was online a couple of years ago when I stumbled upon a website in which professional artists copy and render children's drawings into finished pieces. This is how I got the idea for this particular lesson plan. Well today you're going to be a finished piece inspired by actual children's drawings or paintings. You are a graphic artist in a large advertising agency. A customer has come to you so that you can design an animated gif for his/her website pertaining to Christmas. The client wanted his/her business name or logo included in the animation. Choose from one of the ficticious business names and create a Christmas animated gif for their website. You must use either the name of the business or first create a business logo and use it in the animation. Be creative!!!!!!! Here are the names of the businesses:

I have been promising animated gifs for some time now. Well today is the day!!!! Don't let the lesson fool you. It may consist of eleven pages of instruction but animated gifs are not terribly difficult to create. Just follow the instructions step by step. In the tutorial you will be using the Layer Manager. NCAEA CONFERENCE IN WINTSON-SALEM

I was delighted to attend the annual NCAEA Conference in Winston-Salem this weekend. It had been years since I had attended and it was good to see some old friends again. While there I did two presentations. The first one was about Global Education: Hiroshima Peace Park and Slave Castles of Ghana. The second presentation was Technology in the Classroom in which I talked about numerous websites and online tools that any teacher, not only art teachers, can use. Leaving my last presentation I was delighted to finally meet artist, author and illustrator of children books, Faith Ringgold. I had spoken to her years ago when my elementary school students had adopted her in our Adopt-A-Star program.

I’ll give you a clue. When you create a post in your blog, you have the option of Compose or Edit HTML. Click on Edit HTML. This is where you will place your code that you receive in the email from AudioPal. Just try it!!!!!!!!! If it doesn’t work, just delete the post.
